Consider Microfiber Bed Sheets

Microfiber Bedding- A New Favorite

Microfiber is used in so many ways that we hear the word often when speaking of bedding , apparel, fabrics and furniture.

Microfiber bed sheets use a newer fabric that is very, very popular these days- but have you every wondered what this microfiber truly is?

To the layman who doesn’t want a bunch of technical data, the fiber is microscopically thin..1/100th the diameter of a human hair.

discount luxery bedding ensembles

Microfiber bedding, as a result is wonderfully soft to the touch.

Products made from microfibers like nylon and polyester are created with fibers that are also strong and extremely thin. These fibers are even thinner than the most luxurious than natural fibers, such as silk. And get this- microfiber can even be made to feel like suede, cotton or silk! How cool is that?

Fabric created from microfiber that is then used to create your bedding means that you will have products that are lighter, more comfortable, long lasting, breathable and even easier to clean. And it doesn’t come with a high price tag either.

Products created from these fibers are also great for allergy sufferers.

Dust mites can live in such places as comforters, pillows and mattresses, microfiber can be woven into dense covers that do not allow the dust mites to escape and bother the allergy sufferer. Microfiber is an invention that has made a big difference in the lives of those with allergies. Zip on pillow covers, quality mattress pads, duvets to cover comforters and even comforters made with microfiber exteriors have reduced the problems for those allergic to dust mites significantly.

But these products are not just for those with allergies.

Let’s look at some of the great bedding you can find made from microfiber:

The Bolder Peak Comforter by Columbia is a great example of the use of microfiber to create practical bedding at low prices.

This reversible comforter has an exterior shell made of 250 thread count microfiber and 100% polyester filling. The comforter is labeled machine washable. Color combinations are navy/camel, black/blue and Berry/China Berry. Practical as bedding choices for dorm rooms, guest rooms, master bedrooms and every bedroom in your house, you’ll love the prices you’ll find on these microfiber comforters by Columbia.

Dockers doesn’t just make clothing anymore.

The famous Dockers label can now be found on bedding- including a reversible comforter set that comes with matching bed skirt and shams.

The microfiber polyester outer shell holds 100% polyester filling to create a lightweight but cozy comforter. Stain Defender technology means that spills and stains will be few and easy to remove because they will not bond with the fabric. Amethyst, black, navy and other colors are combined to provide lots of color choices in the reversible comforter. The pillow shams and bed skirt match one side of the comforter and coordinate with the other side. This microfiber choice is a great way to stretch your bedding dollar.

Microsuede and microfiber combine to create a great comforter from the J.C. Penny line of bedding.

One side of the reversible comforter is microfiber polyester, the other side is polyester microsuede, providing variation in textures. The hypoallergenic 100% polyester filling makes this machine washable comforter a great choice. Available with matching cotton/polyester blend pillow shams. Colors are black/tarragon, navy/wedgewood and thyme/tarragon.

If you want a comforter that feels like real down, you’ll want to know about Camden’s Reversible Down-Like Comforter. This bedding is filled with microgel, a down-like product that is allergy resistant and has that luxurious down feel. The outer shell is polyester microfiber and ten reversible color combinations are available. If you love down but don’t love the weight of down, you’ll love this down-like microgel filling inside the lightweight microfiber shell.

If you prefer blankets to comforters, Biederlack has created the Aurora Microfiber Bed Blanket that is light weight yet warm and cozy. The soft feel of the microfiber makes this bedding choice perfect in any and every one of the nine beautiful colors available. All common sizes are also available. You’ll want to add several to your bedding collection because they are reasonably priced yet high quality and fully machine washable.

Remember to read and follow the care labels on your bedding created from microfiber. Most microfiber should not be left in a hot dryer for prolonged periods of time. The material dries quickly because of the tiny fibers in the bedding.

Microfiber- A new favorite in the world of bedding.

Hotel Collection Bedding

Hotel Linens

Hotels began putting high quality sheets on their beds to provide a luxurious experience for their guests, and to separate themselves from competitors.

Frette Hotel Collection Linens are recognizable to millions of travelers because they began putting 100% Egyptian cotton bedding in the world’s elite hotels.

Pioneer Linens features Frette linens because of their time-honored tradition of quality. Frette Italian linen starts with the best fiber and ends with superior weaving and finishing. When you’re looking for the luxury of Frette linen, think Pioneer Linens.

Frette History

The name Frette is synonymous with luxury because of the company’s long-standing passion for quality. Edmond Frette established the fine linen company in Grenoble, France in 1860. Along with his partners, Frette created a firm focused solely on fabric, allowing them to become the worldwide leader in the specialty. Soon two factories were established in Sovico and Concorezzo, Italy, where the company is still based today. Frette opened retail stores in Milan, and its first boutique opened on Bond Street in London in 1877, offering linens of the highest quality. Since then Frette linen has expanded worldwide, from Hong Kong to Beverly Hills. Over the years the company reorganized numerous times to accommodate expansion and growth for a product that was becoming highly desired. In 1978 Frette sheets became available in the United States.

Frette Quality Tradition

Frette led the industry by introducing new ways of producing fine linens. In 1880, Frette began to use Vicenzi looms allowing the company to produce intricate damasks unlike any others. These new methods of production enabled the unique company to stand apart and start fulfilling special requests, such as providing linens for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Kingdom of Italy. Embassies all over the world soon followed suit, and many noble European families began seeking Frette linen. Today, Frette bedding and table linens can be found in the homes of the elite and in many boutiques and hotels, such as the Ritz in Paris and the Plaza in New York. Frette outfitted the Titanic, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Orient Express, and the Queen Mary II. Frette introduced a home-wear collection in 1889, focusing on comfortable clothing for people relaxing at home. Almost a century later, the Frette-To-Wear collection provides elegant lounging attire.

Frette Hotel Bedding Collection

Frette led the fine linen industry again by introducing luxurious sheets to many of the world’s elite hotels. Frette hotel bedding has become the style of choice for many people who first experienced premium Frette sheets during a stay at a five-star hotel such as Claridge’s in London. The 100% Egyptian cotton, 200 thread count Frette Hotel Collection proves that true quality is found in bedding that starts with the best fiber and ends with the best finishing. The fiber, 100% Egyptian long-staple cotton, is superior to other grades of cotton by virtue of its strength, length, and softness. The finishing is performed by the delicate hands of Italian craftsmen whose expertise has been practiced through centuries of tradition. The result is unmatched luxurious bed linens.

Frette sheets in the hotel collection display an embroidered double-piping for classic bed linens with modern appeal. Enjoy the quality chosen by the world’s finest hotels for the comfort you deserve every night at home.

Choosing Your Bed Linen

Buying The Right Bed Sheets

Make sure that you get the right type of bedding! After all, you spend a lot of your life in your bed sleeping and rejuvenating for the next day’s activity.

Sleeping is a process that takes up roughly about about a third of the average person’s life. So it makes sense that you would want to make your bed comfortable and a pleasure to be in. It also is a nice bonus if the bedding you choose enhances the overall decor of your home and is pleasing to the eye.

  discount bed linens

Bed sheets are an important part of the overall bedding items used on a bed, and here are a few guidelines for choosing high quality bed sheets that you will be happy with:

Size of bed sheets is a very important factor. It used to be that most mattresses were pretty standard sizes and so you could buy sheets in genralized categories like “Full”, “Queen”, and “King”, and be reasonably sure that they would fit right out of the box.

But lately, mattress manufacturers have gone to adding more features to their mattresses to make them appeal to a wider range of customers, like adding pillow tops on one side or even both sides of the mattress. This added material makes the mattress much wider and therefore any bed sheets that are used on that bed will need to be bigger as well in order to fit properly. That’s why it’s a good idea to actually measure your bed in advance and make sure that the sheets will fit your particular mattress before buying them. You may have to buy one category larger or more to fit your bed.

Thread count is another important consideration when buying bed sheets. Thread count per inch, or TPI, states how many threads are in a square inch of the bed sheet material. Generally speaking, anything over 250 makes for a soft, comfortable feel, and also tends to last longer and hold up under more use. Try to avoid bed sheets that have very low thread counts under 200.

The kind of material used for bed sheets can vary considerably, from cotton to exotic silks. Cotton seems to be the most popular, but you may also want to experiment with fleece bed sheets flannel sheets, and cotton mixed fabrics. Satins and silks are considered very high end and tend to be expensive, but some people really enjoy them as bed sheets, and wouldn’t use anything else.

After practical considerations such as these are made, you just have to decide what colors and designs that you want on your bed and we recommend that you try to stay within the overall theme of your bedroom’s decor. Selecting bed sheets is is simple if you follow these basic guidelines, and they will reward you with years of good service.

Master Bedroom Bedding

Quite awhile ago, we discussed whether or not you all like the unmade bed look.

Thread Count Per Inch Is Important

Thread count per inch or TPI is an important factor to be considered while buying a bed sheet. Bedsheets with higher TPI (more than 250) are softer, more comfortable and last longer.

How To Buy Quality Bedding

There are so many places in our daily life where we tend to compromise on quality for cheaper buys. But when it comes to picking something on which you spend a third of your life, select quality.

How Often Should You Change Your Bed Linens?

I get questions from my customers about how to best take care of their  bed linens  .

You may have been wondering about this too. How often should bed linen be changed to maintain your linens for years of use. You might also wonder how often to change linen if you have an allergy sufferer in your home. Let’s get into it then- How often bed linens should be changed depends on several different things.

Every person sheds skin every day and every night, resulting in bits of dead skin to be on bed linens after a night’s sleep. It would be very nice to have bed linen changed daily for complete freshness, but for most busy people this is impractical and virtually impossible.

Probably only people who have a housekeeping staff can enjoy the luxury of fresh sheets and pillowcases being replaced daily. In general, a good homemaker changes bed linens at least once per week. However, if experiencing night sweats or hot flashes, it may be best to change them more frequently.

Assuming that the people who sleep in the bed shower before bedtime, that they do not eat or drink in bed and cause spills, or that the bed linen becomes dirty more quickly for any other reason, weekly linen changes are normally sufficient. Some people prefer to change their bed linen twice weekly to ensure their sheets always feel fresh and snuggly. If you want to do this, you need to have a good supply of bed sheets .

Anyone who has allergies should change their bed linen as often as possible. Dust mites and other allergens collect on bed linen and can aggravate allergies causing runny noses, stuffed sinuses, and other problems that last all day long. In fact, some people with the most severe allergies are forced to change bed linens each day to prevent suffering after sleeping on day-old bed linens.

So, the answer to the question of how often should bed linens be changed really depends on your lifestyle, your health, and your personal preferences. However, you should never leave bed linen on the bed longer than one week. It’s usually best to own at least 3 sets of bed linens . One for the bed…one in the linen closet and one in the laundry.

French Toile Is A Classic

toile, bed and bedding   French Toile Bedding Tips For A Classic Touch

French toile bedding is enjoying a huge resurgence in popularity for bedroom decorating. What, you may be wondering, is French toile? Quite simply, French toile (twaal) is cotton fabric with all over floral or pastoral prints.

The most common colors for these luxury linens are black, navy or blue, red, and green on white or cream backgrounds. These prints work great with French provincial or traditional bedroom furnishings. Genuine toile comes only from France and is quite airy, allowing it to drape well when used in bedding, draperies, bed canopies, or just about anywhere in the home.

Numerous bedding manufacturers offer French toile bedding that is sure to please. Let’s look at some of the favorites more closely…

Linen source  offers toile by a number of manufacturers. Search for "toile."

Country Life Toile Black by Waverly features black on off-white print in a traditional 18th Centruly toile de Jouy motif coordinated with a classic country check print. Using three different fabrics, Country Life Black, Classic Ticking Black, and Cheerful Check Black, the ensemble offers a cozy, cottage feel to any bedroom.

Thomasville offers Provence, a whimsical twist on classic French toile. Using a sunny yellow background, the toile print features blue and white gazebo scenes framed in blue floral garlands. Blue and yellow awning stripes create a coordinating bed skirt and boudoir pillow. White and blue gingham check sheets add to the charm of this country-themed French toile bedding. Coordinating accessories are available to design a unique toile bedroom look you’ll love.

A.J. Moss Victorian Park toile bedding line boasts elegant yet colorful toile prints on ivory. Choose from blue, red, green, or traditional black to depict the detailed scenes of this French toile bedding print. The comforter, shams, and reversible throw pillows reverse to gingham check print in the colors of the bedding. This gingham print continues on the matching bed skirt and European shams.

Cherrington is another offering from Thomasville in the French toile style. The sapphire and off-white tree of life pattern depicted on the comforter is offset by bold stripes on the bed skirt, European pillow shams, and throw pillows. Sheets are available which reflect the comforter colors, but in reverse colors, making this collection prefer for a master or guest bedroom.

Thomasville has really jumped into the French toile bedding niche. Bouvier, another of their designs, offer classic black and cream toile but updated with modern red accents. The bed skirt adds a leaf print and sheets complete the look using a black and cream windowpane plaid print. This great ensemble uses the beauty of the traditional mixed with flare of modern elements to create a French toile bedding collection that can fit into many less traditional bedroom designs.

Hope you enjoyed this little  guide to Toile bedding . Now why not give it a try in your very own bedroom.

Decorating Your Bedroom On A Budget

Budget Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Get some great bedroom decorating ideas that do not cost an arm and a leg. Budget bedroom decorating ideas are easier than you may think.

Some of the best bedroom decorating ideas do not cost an arm and a leg. Before planning your makeover the first thing you should do is give the room a total cleaning from top to bottom. Remove all clutter. If an item doesn’t belong in a bedroom then relocate it to it’s proper place. Remove computers and electronics as it is proven to interfere with peaceful sleep to have those types of items in your bedroom. Your bedroom should be about relaxation and sleep.

Take a look at every trinket and knick knack in the room. Are they there just because you have them and hate to throw anything out or are they there because you truly love them and enjoy looking at them? Only items that you are proud of should be kept. Donate some items or give to friends who have admired them. The rest can be tossed out. You want a clean slate to start your makeover.

Once the clean and de-clutter is done I always suggest you walk into your bedroom with an objective eye as if you were visiting the room for the first time. Does it feel like a quiet retreat? Does it reflect your personality? Sometimes the de-clutter is all it takes and you fall in love with your room again. If that is the case treat yourself to a few new accessories and you are done. For most of us though it is time for a change as we have gotten bored with the color palette and decor style.

First, take a look at the bed. It is the focal point of the room. Do you like the headboard? If not, there are many ways to very inexpensively make it look like you got new furniture. Upholstered headboards are not only trendy, they are practical and inexpensive. With a sheet of plywood, a sheet of foam and a cheap upholstery fabric remnant you can create a unique and stylish headboard that is easy to update anytime you want to change the look of your room. Other budget friendly headboard ideas are old doors or shutters picked up at flea markets or second hand stores. Paint them to co-ordinate with your room and attach them to the wall at the head of your bed.

Next let’s look at your bed linens. If you are planning to purchase new sheets wait until there is a white sale at your local department or bedding store then buy the best quality you can possible afford at the time. Stick to very neutral solid colors. White, tan or gray are safe bets when buying sheets. Those colors will co-ordinate with almost any color palette and will not need to be replaced every time you redecorate your room. The same rule applies when purchasing or making your comforter or duvet cover and draperies. These are the most expensive items to replace and you should look at them as the backdrop for your decorating project. Add the pizazz and punch to the room with less expensive accessories.

Now that you have the essentials looked after it is time to have some fun with the decorating. Choose your color palette. Ask yourself what mood you want your room to have. Do you want tranquility or drama? For tranquil settings you will want to choose a monochromatic color scheme in quiet paler shades. For drama choose contrasting colors. If you are stuck on choosing a dominant color take a look inside your closet. Most people choose colors of clothing that they like or feel they look good in. This may give you a hint on what colors you truly enjoy.

When decorating a space, divide the colors in the space into components of 60 percent of a dominant color, 30 percent of a secondary color and 10 percent of an accent color. The walls will most likely be the majority, the bedding and draperies would represent the secondary color and accessories such as a floral arrangements, art or throw pillows would make up the rest. The colors are properly balanced and there is a shot of color (the 10 percent color) for interest. Color Tip: If you have a small room, don’t paint it white to make it seem bigger. Instead go with the architecture and paint it a rich, warm color to make it cozier. Let your big rooms expand with light, let your small rooms wrap you up and nurture you.

Paint can have the most dramatic effect on your makeover and will change the entire feel of your room. It is also one of the least expensive changes to make. A gallon of paint and an afternoon of labor may be just what the doctor ordered to fix your tired bedroom.

Choosing accessories is the final touch that will transform your bedroom into YOUR space. When selecting fabrics for throw pillows and accessories remember that adding texture also adds interest for the eye. Try choosing several textures and patterns all in the same color. This is very pleasing to the eye. Then give in to that one piece of fabric that is fun and colorful to add pizazz and personality to the room.

Now stand back and admire the designer bedroom you have created with a small budget and big bedroom decorating ideas and be proud of a job well done!

Cotton Egyptian Bedding – Four Considerations

Egyptian Cotton Bed Linen – Four Key Components

The Thread Count

This is a measure of the number of yarns woven into one square inch of fabric. Generally, the higher the thread count the softer the fabric is. Good quality bed linens have a thread count of 180 or higher.

However a word of caution, it is quite common to get high thread count fabric that is very poor and discerning customers must be wary when buying products described as Egyptian Cotton.

The Quality of the Yarn

The finest cotton in the world is grown on the banks of the River Nile. Egyptian Cotton is renowned because it yields the longest staple cotton in the world. Staple means the individual cotton fibre or hair.

Here at HomeCottons we select Egyptian Cotton sheets which are only produced in Egyptian Cotton mills producing a strictly limited amount of fabric each day. This ensures the superiority of our cotton and the product created by the craftsmen.

The long staple cotton can be spun into a smoother, stronger, much finer yarn, so that it is possible to weave more threads per inch into the fabric, resulting in a higher thread count.

A word of warning, short staple cotton yarns can be crammed into a square inch to create a high thread count, as a result the fabric will feel course, which cannot be compared to the fine Egyptian Cotton, sold by HomeCottons.

The Quality of Construction

The expertise and experience of the craftsmen is a key component to producing fine linens. From selecting the type and fineness of the yarn to choose for the weave, to the diameter of the yarn to create the desired hand such as silken sateen, crisp percale or lustrous jacquard. The Egyptian Cotton mills we use have extensive knowledge of their craft.

The Quality of Finishing

Our craftsmen’s attention to detail continues beyond selecting, spinning and weaving the worlds finest Egyptian Cotton. Fabric finishing and sewing is key to giving the discerning customer the real thing.

Our Egyptian Cotton sheets are mercerised which helps plump the fibres as a result this strengthens the fabric and gives it a more lustrous look.

The result of all our care and attention gives you the customer an unblemished cloth that is genuinely 100% Egyptian Cotton. There is nothing like the comfort and luxury of an Egyptian Cotton sheet to transform your quality of sleep, it is a luxury worth the investment.

Shopping For The Right Bed Sheets

Shopping For The Right Bed Sheets

Practical and pretty sheets on your bed can refresh a room with comfort and beauty.

High-quality bed sheets can last up to 15 years. When you buy bed sheets, whether you need king size sheets, queen size sheets, or twin sheets, you need to look at thread count and fabric as they determine the quality of a sheet.

They were traditionally white, but now often various colours and patterns are used. They are larger than the bed, so they can be tucked under the mattress in order to be kept in place. The quality of bed sheets is often conveyed by the thread count – the number of threads per square inch of material. Sheets with high thread counts in the 300-and-above range have a durable, lustrous, and soft fabric that gets softer over time and are considered luxury quality. Sheets with lower thread count sheets in the 80- to 120-thread count range have a rougher feel.

Thread count also determines whether a sheet is muslin or percale. Sheets with a thread count of 140 to 180 are muslin; everything higher is percale. In many areas of the world a second flat bed sheet is laid on top of the sheet covering the mattress. This is known as a "top sheet."

Also style is equally important as material quality in selecting the proper sheets for your bedding needs. Crisp, white sheets never go out of style and are always a good selection whether as part of a set or purchased singly to mix and match. Sheets in colours, prints, plaids, and patterns are easy to find in all sizes and price ranges. Each fabric commonly used to make sheets has its own merits.

For comfort and durability, you should choose cotton. One-hundred-percent cotton is a natural and breathable fabric. The most commonly used for cotton sheets are flannel, muslin, oxford, percale, and sateen weaves.

Flannel sheets are warm and may be blended with either a synthetic fabric or cotton. They are typically used in cold climates or in winter because the napped finish provides warmth.

Muslin sheets, commonly used in children’s character-themed bedding, have a rough and tough feel and are at the low end of the cotton spectrum.
Oxford is a soft but heavy sheet.

By: Alison White

Article Directory : http://www.articledashboard.com

Percale sheets offer a smooth, flat, and closely-woven fabric, finer than muslin. Egyptian cotton sheets are highly durable, lustrous, and silky Egyptian cotton sheets usually have a thread count above 200. The most desired of all bedding fabrics, Egyptian cotton is made of extra-long fiber staples grown along the Nile River. Standard sizes are twin, full, Queen, King, California King.

How to Buy A Great Set Of Bed Linen

Secrets To Buying A Great Set Of Bed Linens

If you’ve ever been shopping for bed linens then you’re probably amazed at all of the available choices in top sheets, fitted sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers. They all come in a variety of styles, sizes, colors, patterns and types of fabrics also.

Whether you’re looking for luxury bed linen or discount linens, it’s all here online nowadays.

It doesn’t have to be confusing though, if you have these nifty tips on hand to help you sort out your bed linen choices.

high thread count sheets, bliss bed linens

First off, go ahead and measure your bed to be absolutely sure what you need is what you end up buying. You don’t want any surprises here.

Don’t go by the typical size label, like queen or king.

Measure the thickness of your mattress, lots of folks forget about this and end up with fitted sheets that pop off because the sheets were made for a thinner mattress.

Some of the newer beds can have pillow top mattresses 18" thick…so if the fit looks close, then opt for the the next size up to account for some possible shrinkage.

A note on fitted sheets.

For the best quality, look for the ones with elastic all the way around. They will stay on the bed without popping off, rather than the ones with elastic only on the sides or on the corners.

Then figure on your pick of fabric.

This is important because your bed sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases will be touching your skin, so it’s probably a good idea to go for more natural fibers like linen, cotton, or blends of those.

You’ll find that they wick away moisture, dry quickly, and are absorbent. Not to mention that they just feel really soft too! Pure cotton fabric feels cooler to the skin also, which is great for those of us who kick off the covers cause we just get too hot at night.

A lot of people go for polyester blends for their bed linens, because they’re more economical and tend to wrinkle a bit less.

They do tend to be warmer for those folks who get too cool at night. But these blends are generally not as comfortable, they hold onto body oils and sometimes odors, and they tend to "pill" also. That means that as they are washed, fibers loosen and eventually fuzz up and form little balls over time.

I remember being able to actually see right through some of my sheets because they had worn out so much right there in the middle, with all of these tiny little balls of what used to be the sheet all over the place. Yes, that was a long time ago- before I knew that nicer sheets and bedding would actually help me feel and sleep better. lol

Some people want to string me up for even mentioning the word polyester in my articles or on my site…but hey…lots of folks still buy and enjoy those poly blends. One lady commented that using polyester sheets was like sleeping inside a plastic garbage bag. I have to take her word on that. lol

These days, most people really are using 100% cotton bed sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers.

For the best durability and softness, a few of the best types of natural fabrics for bed linens are pure Egyptian cotton and Pima or Supima.

What makes this cotton better than all the rest is the fact that their fibers are longer than regular run of the mill cheaper, shorter fiber lower thread count cotton.

Why is this important for bed linens?

Well, if the fibers are longer they makes stronger thread, and then stronger yarns, and ultimately you’ll end up with stronger fabric for your bed sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, comforter shells..etc… These linens even get softer and more comfortable as you wash them over time. You’ll be thrilled at how soft and luxurious 100% Egyptian cotton sheets can feel under your skin.

Some folks write and ask me why their sheets pill even though they swear to me that they are really positive that they have 100% pure high thread count bed linens.

Be careful here and make absolutely sure that you’re buying 100% Egyptian or Pima, or Supima cotton. Sometimes you’ll end up with misleading labels that actually don’t mention that they have blends with other cheaper cotton fibers. This is why it’s very important that if you’re spending the dollars for that level of quality sheets, you buy through reputable retailers. Remember that skimping on the price is okay as long as you don’t expect to have the finest most luxurious, longest lasting bed linens on your bed.

There are a few other things to keep in mind when buying bed linens:

1. Using harsh detergent may hasten the breakdown of your linens. Use a small amount of a gentle liquid detergent to help prevent pilling. If you have hard water, then toss in a little bit of fabric softener right into your washing machine. And hey – put them on the gentle cycle… unless you haven’t washed them in over a month they shouldn’t really be that dirty, unless you sweat a lot of course. If you’ve got the washer on the other cycles…then it’s just like taking your sheets out and clubbing them with a rock. No wonder they pill. lol

2. Leaving your sheets and other bedding in the dryer on high…or for too long will also really start to bake your sheets. Not good. Try and take sheets out while they’re still a tiny tiny bit damp. You’ll get less wrinkling that way also….which is a great thing for you and your sheets, pillowcase and duvet covers! Just fold them up nice and they’ll dry out naturally. Better yet, try a clothesline when possible.

3..Wash your bedding once per week. So figure on always having 3 decent complete sets of sheets. So, it’s one set on the bed, one in the laundry, and one in your linen closet. If having fine bed linens is important to you, then this little routine will help you get the most comfort and use out of them.

Then there’s the whole thread count aspect of linens, which just means how many threads run up and down through one square inch of fabric.

Generally speaking, thread counts range from 80 or so, to well up over 1000 these days.

You’d assume that the higher the count the better your bed linens would be. The thing is, that the more threads that you put into that one square inch, the smaller those threads tend to become. Some bed linen manufacturers split the threads and then weave them in a way that allows them to say the thread count is double. Naughty naughty. lol

So there is a point at which a higher thread count doesn’t guarantee better softness and durability….which happens somewhere around 400 as I’ve noticed in reviews by experts in the bed linen industry.

So, a general rule of thumb to go by:

200 to 220 is respectable thread count, and is just fine for daily use.
230 to 290 is better
300 to 400 is best

That being said, there are those folks that really love their 1000 count luxury bed linen and wouldn’t have anything else!

I hope this little guide helps you find the most comfy bed linens you’ve ever had.

Give the gift of a good night’s sleep this Valentine’s Day .

Here’s a really great article that we found about how to make sure that both you and your partner get a good night’s sleep. Dan and I have had many late night ‘conversations’ on our differing views about how the bed should be made, how many blankets to put on the bed,how the sheets should be tucked in, when the bed should be made – on and on…

As a couple , this has been one of the very few sore points in our relationship. You see, I like to be warm and cozy with little regard to sheet alignment, while Dan requires very little cover and perfectly aligned sheets and blankets before he gets into bed. Considering that I normally go to bed before him, his aligning the sheets at 1am has caused many a late night squabble.

We’ve actually implemented several of the suggestions in this article and they’ve made a huge difference for us. The great tips in this article are sure to improve your relationship and help you both get a better night’s sleep – together!

Revive Your Bedroom Just in Time for Valentine’s Day
From Tango Magazine

Bunking together is all fun and games until somebody steals the covers. Contributing editors Lauren and Anne Purcell tell you how to negotiate common bedroom quandaries, and wake up happy.

Scientific studies abound on how many hours we Americans spend in bed sleeping, having sex, or lying awake wondering when we’ll get to sleep or have sex. The level of scrutiny is somewhat mystifying, given the fairly obvious findings. (In round figures: not enough, not nearly enough, and is it any wonder Ambien sales have skyrocketed?)

Bottom line: on average, we’re between the sheets for more than a third of our lives. Any place you spend that much time should make you happy, and never more so than when it’s 60 by 80 inches and there are two of you. Your bed should be supremely, beckoningly comfortable, so you can rest; and as co-habitable and conflict free as possible, to help you nest.

Sheet smarts
In the last couple of years, thread counts – the number of threads in one square inch of fabric have crept into the four digits. But do higher numbers indicate softer sheets?

Only to a point…

After about 500, what you’re paying for are the salaries of those tricky folks in the marketing department who realized they could describe a 500-thread-count sheet as a 1,000 if it’s woven with two-ply thread. The truth is that you’re likely to find 300- or 400- count sheets plenty luxurious (and easier on the checkbook). Guests staying in the presidential suite at the Four Seasons in New York City, one of the priciest hotel rooms in the country, pay $15,000 a night and they’re resting their weary, wealthy bodies on 220-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets.

Egyptian is the key here – that variety is acknowledged to have the longest fiber, another contributor to softness. Once you’ve selected sheets, of course, you have to share them.

And there, the troubles too often begin.

One couple we know disagrees on how to tuck in the top sheet. He likes to anchor a generous swath so his feet don’t poke out. She likes enough covers to form a turtleneck at the top. The solution is simple, though it took them a while to figure it out: they tuck in the sheet at an angle.

A more common cause for conflict among couplesis the side-to-side shortage, caused by a sleeper who rolls over… and over and over. On a queen bed, a king-size top sheet can ease the tussle. For hardcore cases, we suggest two top sheets overlapped in the middle. At bedtime, the illusion is that you’re cozily covered by the same sheet. Later, the roller winds up in his, or her, own little burrito without uncovering his bedmate.

Dan and Jennifer: This one is a non-issue for us – we both love soft! Egyptian cotton is definitely the way to go and we recommend 600-800 thread count sheets. Macy’s Hotel collection is awesome if there’s a Macy’s in your area.

Topper tips
In the bed-as-battleground department, second to sheet spats are temperature tantrums.

One partner prefers to set the A/C on "cryogenic" while the other lies shivering in flannel pajamas in August. Clearly, this is grounds for a blanket intervention. The most heated arguments we’ve heard between partners with a body-temp differential are caused by down duvets, which have taken bedrooms by storm.

Unfortunately, no matter how "summer weight" a duvet claims to be, it always seems to make someone sweat. And try throwing off a duvet when you feel a little steamy. It becomes a fabric-and feathers snow bank threatening to avalanche. So we’re fans of the sheet-and-blanket combo. The enormous variety of fabrics and weights lets you fine-tune your comfort level: cotton for summer, wool for warmth and pleasing heft in winter.

The point is to layer independently: cover the entire bed with a lightweight cotton blanket, then on your side, add a cashmere throw. (Electric blankets are a retro, but remarkably effective alternative. Equipped with dual remotes and no wires you each control the temp on your half of the bed.)

Dan and Jennifer: Dan has a light weight down blanket on his side and I have an added quilt, folded in half on my side of the bed – that way we are both comfy and cozy.

Mattress matters
But even the finest bedding can’t make up for a bed with bad ergonomics.

Unfortunately, buying a mattress (you need a new one about every ten years) can be as confusing as selecting a cellular plan.

What you’re looking for is a mattress that conforms to your spine’s natural curves. It should be neither so firm that your body touches down only at three or four points, nor so soft that you sink into it like marshmallow cream. That can be tough to determine in a quick test-drive at the mattress shop.

One hint: you can change positions up to 40 times while you sleep, so shift, turn, and try out multiple arrangements of limbs. Still, the best way to avoid mattress remorse is to sleep on the one you’re considering preferably for several nights in a row.

That may explain the growing popularity of hotel mattress-purchase programs, which have cropped up in hotels from the Ritz-Carlton to La Quinta. You slept soundly every night of a weeklong trip? Bring the bliss home by buying the identical mattress. If that’s impractical, you should find a dealer with an exchange policy that gives you a week or more with a mattress before you commit (many do).

An easier question to answer than "how firm?" is "how big?" If you’re often joined in bed by kids, dogs, and his-and-her laptops, then a king-size bed (76 inches wide) might be right for you. But we’re fans of the 60-inch wide queen, because it better fosters a "couple connection".

Yes, each of you sacrifices eight inches of elbow room, but that means you’re always within snuggling distance. Remember, we’re talking a third of your lives. You shouldn’t be at each other’s throats. You should be in each other’s arms.

Dan and Jennifer: Dan gets way too hot to snuggle inbed. We make up for it with lots of hugs and kisses during the day, but at night, we keep our distance and stay on our own sides of a great big King Size mattress.

Our bed, which we think is the single most comfortable bed in existence, is a Stearns and Foster, no flip mattress (one of those really thick mattresses that you see in luxury hotels). The mattress is so comfortable that it makes you want to stay in bed all day!)

Good Night… and Good Luck!
